LISTEN: All The Porn Talk On Sex City!

As you might guess, I rather enjoy talking about porn and erotic film. It is such a rich, complex and controversial subject. As such, last night's Sex City was a great experience.

First, Christopher Zeischegg, aka Danny Wylde, opened up for all of us, telling us why he had to leave his porn career and why he decided to make a different return to filmed sex with his partner. Very moving.

Then I had a great time talking to Kitty Stryker all about porn parody films. It is a huge and still-growing genre in porn that Kitty notes is accessible because of the humour and familiarity with characters.

Finally, Paul Deeb sheds some light on his process in breaking the fourth wall of film in his Feminist Porn Award-winning short film Trains. His unconventional technique results in a stunning and compelling narrative that is a treat and well deserving of the title "Sexiest Short."

Take a listen to the whole show here.

Also, please consider donating to CIUT. Our transmitter bit the dust so we're pulling together to Erect That Transmitter! Helping out will ensure that unique shows like Sex City stay on the air.

Pandora Blake's Feminist Porn Awards & Con Round-up

Pandora's thoughts on the events are particularly interesting because, as she notes, she does not shoot porn with sex in it, but rather her wonderful spanking porn. Personally speaking, I definitely think her work has a place in the awards and the community—and I hope her inspiration of being here and being present and, most of all, being vocal act as a stimulus for other fetish and niche producers to get their feminist-minded porn out to this audience. There is so much more sexy goodness out there, let's discover it together as a community!

Dispelling Lies About Bi Folk

I continue to be astounded by the need for lists like this on 13 myths about bisexuals. But we do need these lists to dispel and hopefully rid the world of the foolish notions both the straight and queer communities continue to belief and discuss about bi folk.

Seriously, when will it end? What "proof" do we need to provide that we exist and that we aren't disingenuous, disease-spreading, self-deluded, cheating jerks?

I'm bi, say hi! Get used to it!

The Why of Top Sex Positions

Check out this list of some of the top sex positions (if hetero sex is your thing) and how they are effective. Sure, we've all seen these and maybe done them, but knowing more about how they work for our bodies will surely increase pleasure!

Daily Sex Discussion #525: Sex Acts in Mainstream?

Daily Sex Discussion #525

Do you think there should be actual sex acts in mainstream films and television?

The Words of Consent

I'll echo this poster's comments that I hope the person who came up with the following list comes forward so we can say "Thank you!"

Taking a look at these phrases to discuss consent...they all seem so...obvious. So, why does a list like this even have to exist?

Because they aren't obvious to so many. We aren't taught to talk like this (in other situations beyond sex). We aren't taught to ask with consideration and care. We aren't taught to offer instruction.

We need to teach.

Trouble Understanding Feminist Porn?

Read this fantastic article by the incomparable Claire Litton-Cohn.

And then read it again.

Game of Thrones Rape Scene?

Even the biggest show in the world isn't immune from improper portrayals and deluded ideas about rape.

Having never read the books, I wouldn't have known that the scene was to be anything more than as it was presented in the episode. Jaime and Cersei have, let's call it, an extremely unique relationship. Changing that scene from a consensual act to one that is obviously non-consensual seems tricky enough.

And then those involved in the production opened their mouths. And, to the best of my knowledge, everyone quoted is a man. And then it got more and more awful.

On Saturday April 12th, Oasis Aqualounge went to 'The Sex'; a carnival-themed fundraiser for P.W.A. This event was inspired by 'The Ex,' as annual summer tradition in Toronto.

The fabulous Fionna Flauntit put on a fantastic show at midnight and two representatives from The Everything To Do With Sex Show hosted a 'Best Orgasm Face contest.'

Oasis Aqualounge raised just over three hundred dollars for P.W.A (People With Aids) and the event was an uplifting and colorful experience!

TMI Tuesday: April 22, 2014—Odds and Ends

TMI Tuesday: April 22, 2014—Odds and Ends

This week’s TMI Tuesday is an outlet for the quirky you. It’s titled Odd and Ends because it is the leftover ideas/questions/thoughts that couldn’t fit into a theme but I know it’s TMI you want to share :)

Let’s Play…

1. How addicted are you? You are in a rush, there is no time to make your morning coffee or stop to buy it. However, you can save time and get your “energy high” by brushing your teeth with a caffeine-infused toothbrush. Would you buy and use this product? Why or why not?
No way, I am not at all addicted to caffeine.

2. You made a sex list of all the things you’d like to do but haven’t done. The list was lost and discovered by your boss at work. He/she ask if they can help you tick a few items off the list. What do you say?
In a fantasy world, I'd say yes. In reality, no, I am not interested in that scenario.

3. Sex around the house. Have you ever been bent over the kitchen counter or bent a lover over the kitchen counter and fucked? What did you like most about it? What did you like least?
Definitely done it. In every place I've lived. Which is kinda funny in that it isn't a particularly favoured activity. It is hot because, hey, great ass view. But I'm not big on standing sex.

4. Sexting…How do you really feel about it?
a. Meh? Not my thing.
b. Can take it or leave it, usually have to be begged to do it
c. I like it, it’s like foreplay.
d. Love it! I’m always sending naughty notes and steamy pics.
e. What’s your number? I have a daily sexting list, wanna sign up?
c. I like it when it is happening. If it happened more, I'd be happy to participate!

5. What do you love to sniff? Why?
Smell a strong sense for me, but I absolutely love the smell of sex and sweat. That is probably the only thing that I will relish the smell of.

Bonus: What is it? Explain how you would use it.

It is a type of cock cage, but more of an erection maintainer.

Teaching Ethical Sex

I love that this article ends with the best thought of all: ethical sex should definitely be taught in school. Not university but high school. And actually, I think the principles and ideas should be introduced before high school—both at home and at school.

STIs Increasing Sex Interest?

This almost sounds like the plot of a sci-fi movie, people becoming more sexually aggressive and active as an infection advances through the hosts body. While this has only been observed in crickets, it will be interesting to follow this research to see if it applies to humans.

Exploring Audio—Sexy and Otherwise with Rose Caraway

I have no problem admitting that I am a sight-oriented person when it comes to most things sexual. Actually, if I were to make a list of how I respond to sexual stimuli, it would likely be as follows:

1. Sight
2. Intellect
3. Touch
4. Sound
5. Scent

Of course, this can vary from situation to situation but it is rare that sight leaves the top spot.

However, I have to say, since I have started exploring more and more of the work of Rose Caraway, I've become more attuned to the rich sensations delivered aurally.

If you follow me here, you'll have noted that Rose and I have worked together and have a rapport already. She was on my show Sex City and we exchange comments on Twitter and Facebook. But this isn't a post about supporting a friend's work because we're friends. This is about tootin' her horn because she is fucking fantastic at what she does.

If you are new to audio erotica, get yourself over the Rose's works The Kiss Me Quicks to jump right in. Rose produces audio versions of erotica stories—but these aren't straight up readings. She infuses music and she works with some of the best erotica writers and publishers in the world.

I recently listened to two different works from Rose, The Big Book of Orgasms: 69 Sexy Stories and Shady Palms. Both are fantastic listens for completely different reasons.

I already knew The Big Book of Orgasms (edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel) was a fantastic collection of erotica because I'd already read it. However, listening to it is an entirely different experience. Because this is the world I already know Rose from erotica work specifically, listening to her was like slipping on those favourite date night underwear, the ones that make you feel extra sexy. And it did not disappoint!

Shady Palms (written by Allen Dusk), on the less sticky hand, is a thriller, a great story full of twists, plenty of macabre action and compelling characters and bits of erotic content here and there. A definite departure from my usual Rose fix! But man is it good. I mean, really good. Both the story and the presentation. I don't usually go for thrillers but Shady Palms had me on the edge of my train/bus/subway seat throughout!

And that's the thing: audiobooks are fantastic for transit. Because of my commute, I am almost always tired. When I'm tired and I try to read, I fall asleep. When that happens, I end up with a rather unfortunately trip back to the stop I was supposed to get off at! Instead, I can set the audiobook to play, turn on an alarm if I'm feeling sleepy and enjoy amazing stories—sexy or thrilling—along the way.

Teching Out Your Sex Life

Crave offers up 3 cool options for you to move your sex life beyond flesh and blood with Couple, MakeLoveNotPorn (yay!) and Kama XCitra.

Sex and tech has been on my mind a fair bit lately. As someone who is not an early adopter, I can't say I jump on these and other new options right away, but I am keen to watch how they develop.

Porn for Women as Sexual Stimulus or Social Agenda?

Very interesting article here that challenges some growing ideas about what porn for women should be, what women want and who makes the rules of that divide.

I think these arguments are a bit premature. Feminist or female-oriented porn is too young a genre to have taken enough root in study. Maybe women prefer male-gaze porn at this point because they haven't been exposed to a female-gaze alternative. Or maybe that is what they like. I think we need to wait until feminist porn has become interwoven into the porn universe. A telling stat to back that up? Millennials are watching the most porn. And they've coming into the genre without being exposed to exclusively male-created porn.

"Erect That Transmitter!" Continue to Support Sex City and CIUT!

Thank you very much to those who have already made donations to the CIUT 89.5FM "Erect that Transmitter" campaign (okay, we dubbed it that on Sex City).

We had a fun and fruitful show last night...a rare instance of all four hosts in the studio at one time. And special thanks go out to Kate and Mark for working the board and our guests! Shawn Syms, Sophie Delancey, Judy Virago and Dainty Box were all fantastic.

Take a listen and DONATE DONATE DONATE

We need to keep this good sexy energy going. We need to make this transmitter happen, we need to make community radio happen, we NEED to keep sex topics on community radio.

Alluring-Art Photography: Evolving Erotic

Erotic images, in many forms, have taken off in so many ways, becoming embraced and enjoyed. In the midst of this broader acceptance, artists such as photographer Richard Lyons are seeking out and developing new technologies to further push erotica to its sexiest potential. In order to publish his innovative Alluring-Art Photography – Digital Erotic Anthology, Richard has set up a campaign and I spoke with him to learn more about his art, embracing cinemagraphs and his plans for this collection.

What inspired you to explore erotic photography?

I've always loved the female form. The curves and contours of their bodies. It was inspiring and when I got into photography I gravitated towards the erotic space. To me, the female body is so much more interesting to photograph then say landscape or lifestyle photography. I love creating that wow image, that makes people want more, and working in erotic photography I can achieve this!

How did you discover cinemagraphs and how did you go about learning the techniques?
Simply by searching through the internet. I'm always looking for new photos, styles, and genres to see what others are creating and when I came across the cinemagraph it captured me. the technique requires you to first start with a video file. You shoot your shot for about 10 seconds. Enough to get the motion you want to see later. Then Open Photoshop and import your video frames to layers. From there you'll create a mask for one layer that will keep the motion and leave the background still.

How can this technology "evolve erotica?"
Using the cinemagraph style, you can take advantage of the subtle movement and make it tell the story or evoke an emotion. Like the skirt blowing in wind to reveal her bottom or a fire's warm glow dancing in and around her body, revealing and hiding her more sexual side.

What is the typical reaction of people seeing this work for the first time?
So far I've had a pretty strong reaction to it. Fortunately people can first relate it to an animated gif so its not shocking to them. They see the subtle movement and want to see whats next! Which is why i'm currently working on this project.

If you could have one person pose for an erotic cinemagraph, who would it be?
That's a great question, and one I'd honestly haven't thought about yet. Off the top of my head I would say a top model or actress which would lead to huge publicity. For the love of the art, I would say the girl next door. I feel our society is closed in about how we view erotica. If we could get it out to the public, using the girl next door, showing them its nothing to be afraid of, people would be more open to enjoying it instead of hiding it.

What plans do you have for future work?
I havent thought to far ahead for future work as I've been so busy trying to make this project a success. My hope is this project does well and people want more!

What is in a name, or, er, URL for a sex blog?

So, just as I decide that I need to take this blog to the next level and hopefully, possibly, make a few nickels from it here and there, I discover that I should have tried to sit on sexinwords.com a long time ago. Of course, it is already taken.

So, what url should I go for?

sexinwords.ca?
sex-in-words.com?
sexinwordsblog.com?

I'm not greatly fond of any of those...but something must be picked.

Maybe something entirely different?

Any and all thoughts will be appreciated and considered!

Sex Stuff: 50 Shades! The Musical—The Original Parody

I'm not afraid to admit that I don't think 50 Shades of Grey is horrible. I'm not going to say it is fantastic, but I think the book is a watershed item in culture, it had a definite (predominantly positive) effect on growing sexual understanding and awareness and was (in spots) fairly hot.

Of course, when something is popular or controversial—or both!—inevitable copycats come along. Personally speaking, the copycat I like best isn't really a copycat at all. Instead, I love parodies! Despite the fact that most parodies are shallow and limited, I still love finding comedic, witty, clever retellings of "classic" stories.

So after listening to my colleague Bryen's interview with Emily Doreezas, Writer/Producer/Touring Director of 50 Shades! The Musical—The Original Parody on Sex City, I set out to see the show because it sounds funny and slick.

And it certainly is!

Because so many parodies really are lacking, I didn't have a lot of hope. I hate to admit it, but this is how I felt. 50 Shades of Grey is an almost too easy prey for humour. The books have been skewered beyond repair, so I was curious what new laughs this production would bring to table.

Turns out, they bring lots. Plenty of clever lines, creative and effective casting, brilliant songs and a great use of minimal staging. I laughed out loud numerous times throughout and sometimes that was just at the voiceover instructing us about intermission. And that is key. The production goes to great lengths to ensure the audience is fully engaged and pulled into the performance. There are a number of instances of characters directly interacting with the audience. At one point some of the audience get up close and very personal with an intimate moment between two of the characters. And every time the audience engaged us, we ate it up.

Not only do the performers engage with the audience, they engage the originating text to a tee. The good and the bad. There are many references, within the storyline, back to the book with a sly wink and smile. Most are entirely overt, but I also picked up on some subtle, yet hilarious, references. Maybe I've spent too much time reading about these books!

One (odd) critique I have of the show: For some reason, in two instances, the writers seem to think that fisting only happens to asses. Certainly, it can be part of ass play, but I'm sure that fisting is more often done to a vagina. Just a minor thing.

I had a fantastic time checking out the production of 50 Shades! The Musical—The Original Parody. We laughed a lot and were consistently surprised by the quality of the writing. Don't be afraid to get roped into...coming!

My Next Sex City—April 22—Danny Wylde! Kitty Stryker! Paul Deeb!

Folks, I'm going to give it to you straight: I do Sex City so that I can showcase people like those who will be on my next edition of Sex City.

Tuesday April 22, 11pm-midnight ET — Listen locally on CIUT 89.5FM or streaming live

And it is because of these people and their stories that I implore you to support Sex City and CIUT in our quest for a new transmitter.

Their stories are vital.

So on Tuesday April 22, I am delighted to welcome this fantastic array of guests.
  • Christopher Zeischegg, formerly known as Danny Wylde in the porn industry, left the biz but recently wrote this compelling piece about performing on video again—with his new partner.
  • Kitty Stryker, queer BBW porn star and sex geek is wildly interested in porn parodies and will tell us all about this growing market in the industry.
  • Paul Deeb is the artist behind Pillow Book and his short film "Trains" (featuring Dylan Ryan and Lily Cade) wowed the crowd and won for Sexiest Short and the Feminist Porn Awards.

Sex City and CIUT Desperately Need Your Help

We at Sex City pride ourselves on being one of the few unabashed, sexy, intelligent discussion of sex, sexuality and gender over the airwaves in Canada. That we get to broadcast online to a global audience is a bonus, but we definitely get our jollies knowing that we're talking about sex on the radio.

Unfortunately, our signal, CIUT's signal, is currently compromised because the station's transmitter has suffered a grand mort. Instead of reaching millions in a significant radius, CIUT is currently only broadcasting to the Toronto area.

This puts a significant kink (not the good kind) in our upcoming Membership Drive. It also makes that Membership Drive all the more important.

CIUT needs $160,000 for a new transmitter and Sex City wants to be the station's best wingperson.

HELP US.

CLICK HERE DONATE TO THE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN.

Click on that link and you'll see you can win prizes if you donate in advance of our April 15 show. Tell them we sent you though! I also think donating early is a sign that you believe in community radio, and specifically talking about sex on the radio.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WIDELY!
We don't mind you talking about us, telling your friends you like how we talk dirty. Hell, even put out number and website on the bathroom wall.

TMI Tuesday: April 8, 2014—The Art of Sex

TMI Tuesday: April 8, 2014—The Art of Sex

For TMI Tuesday this week we delve into the creative collaboration when sex meets art with The Art of Sex.

1. Would you take or have you taken a sexually themed vacation getaway (i.e., Hedonism, Club Fantasy Island, Cap d’Agde)? Why or why not?
Does Niagara Falls count? I grew up near it and have gone back to stay in one of the numerous hotels. I think it even had a heart-shaped jacuzzi!

2. You have won an erotic fantasy weekend getaway package custom fit to your needs. Describe the fantasy you desire.
Someplace hot that allows nudity on the beach (and elsewhere). My room opens to the beach. That's all I need.

3. An artist has decided that you are his/her inspiration. They want to capture the essence of your sexiness in a sculpture. What would that sculpture look like? Describe it for us or post a photo of an existing sculpture that you believe closely captures the essence of your sexiness.
Yup, bowl of cocks

4. You are being paid 500,000 USD to pose as a live nude model mimicking one of sculptures in the photo below. Which sculpture will you recreate live? Why?

The bigger question is: who is my partner in posing? I will say though, I'd choose #2. All dudes want to try this.

5. Which book title fits your current thoughts of love, sex or romance?
a. No More Silly Love Songs
b. The Joy of the Quickie
c. Dr. Seth’s Love Prescription
d. Why Do Fools Fall In Love

A. We are the least romantic, but entirely happy and delightful, couple in the world.

Bonus: Which one is you? See the sculpture below. Tell us which position you would like to occupy and write a caption.

Cocksucker for sure! The other two are working too damn hard!

EXCELLENT—"8 Things America Gets Wrong About Sex"

There is so much here, so much to learn. I'm going to assume that much of what is stated here could also be applied to Canada...but not quite as harshly. What the hell happened to sex in North America?

Strap-on Pleasure Podcast!

Check out Episode 1 of Kink, etc.'s brand new podcast devoted to strap-on sex! Given that it is one of my most favourite activities in the world, I gotta say I'll be a dedicated fan with each broadcast! Lori introduces us to the podcast and her and Hubby's introduction to pegging. A great listen!

Feminist Porn Conference, Day 2!

Day 2 of the Feminist Porn Conference was very good again, but I made a hasty exit before Courtney Trouble's closing. I hear it was fantastic, but I had the opportunity to catch one of my monkey's races at a swim meet and Daddy duty won out.

I caught the following workshops, deciding to stick with porn business-related topics:

Creating Fetish Content for Fun & Profit
Morgan Thorne

If You Build It, They Will .com:
Web Development & Troubleshooting
Chris Lowrance, Jiz Lee

Turned On: New Technologies, Sexual Interface, Feminist Erotic Media
N. Maxwell Lander, JP Robichaud, Merritt Kopas, Naomi de Szegheo-Lang
The first two were fantastic. I might not be planning to create porn, but Morgan Thorne's workshop was excellent. Local folks, or those who plan to visit: Morgan is a great resource here in Toronto. If you have a chance to take one of her workshops, get on it! She presented really good stuff for anyone aspiring to get into making porn—a lot of info I could have used back in the day when I was producing. The document she provided will help attendees really pull their work to the next level.

The development workshop was also extremely helpful. Jiz and Chris were a great team, fielding questions and providing a fantastic document of their talk. All info I need and will use in the coming weeks.

The third workshop didn't do much for me. It seemed disorganized and the speakers seemed a bit ill-prepared. Definitely the least informative time I spent at the Con.

At lunch I was lucky to meet and chat with two fascinating folks: Mistress Isobel and Dr. Timaree Schmit. Timaree even interviewed us for her podcast!

Overall, I have to say I am so pleased that the Feminist Porn Con is such a success. There were so many people from out of town, people engaged in new topics and a level of dialogue without compare. It is so well-organized, features so many high-level speakers and topics and pretty much blew my mind in both the sessions and between the sessions.

I am very much looking forward to next year and continuing the conversations throughout the year.

Feminist Porn Conference, Brief Day 1 Round-up!

I'll be heading back into Toronto for day 2 of the Feminist Porn Conference in a little bit. Yesterday I caught the following sessions:

Feminist Porn: What It Is, What It Isn't & Why It Matters
Lynn Comella, Courtney Trouble, Ms. Naughty, Tanesha H.D.

Pornographers Without Borders
Jennifer Lyon Bell, Pandora Blake,
Ms. Naughty, Ovidie, Constance Penley (mod.)

Film Screening + Director Q&A:
Rhabillage
Ovidie
(France)

Opening Keynote: Lisa Duggan
introduced by Lynn Comella
Room 1160 (1st Floor)

When I have some time, I might through up some notes I took during the first two session. What has struck me the most has been learning about the legalities of porn, the access to porn and the culture of porn in different countries. I wasn't planning to go to Ovidie's screening, but it was too tempting to pass up after hearing her in the Pornographers Without Borders session. So much of the information I read and see and hear on porn is from a specifically North American perspective and I definitely had some assumptions about what it is like in other places, particularly France and Australia. Fascinating things to learn.

I also had a fun lunch with Lucie Blush, Claire Litton, Niya B and Julia Sheldon

Today, I think I know my session route, but I'm not sure. The Biz Track sessions are a fantastic idea...but am I ever going to get into making porn? Hmmm, probably not. During the Feminist Porn Awards I did think of an idea for a short I'd love to produce, but I lack two major attributes—cash and skill! We'll see. Some of the sessions have to do with web development...I wonder if I could put that time down as training for my PA at work? Would be fun to explain!

Gotta get ready to go!
